Do you have a huge supply of colored pencils? Here are 4 top storage ideas to keep your supplies organized and in easy reach!
I recently helped my daughter Allison organize the art and craft supplies in her room. We invested in a few things that helps her easily find what she needs, and she loves every part of it- including her new desk!
One thing I really wanted to organize was her coloring tools. Crayons, colored pencils, pens, etc. They were scattered all over the place and she had a hard time finding what she wanted.

Are you looking for some easy storage ideas for your colored pencils? They’re one of Allison’s favorite tools so I wanted her to have easy access! There are a ton of storage options out there; but here are 4 methods we use to keep colored pencils organized and at least in the same spot every time.
Side note: None of these help us sort by color. Allison doesn’t care about being color-coordinated and having things in the right order. This is the best way for her brain and it may work for you too!

Storage bin
If you have a huge amount of colored pencils, a clear bin like this is a good option. I helped organize my daughter’s art and craft supplies recently, and found a few of these Sterlite bins at Meijer.
These were a little too big for what we needed, but all of her colored pencils fit so I consider that a win!
We keep this on her cube shelf, along with other art supplies, and it works pretty well as a storage area. Allison just pulls out the bin she needs, has a blast, and puts it right back when she’s done. And the best thing is, we can always repurpose this storage container for other things once she’s done using colored pencils.
This is a great way to store other art supplies, too! We have others to store crayons, pens, pencils, and markers.

Lazy Susan
I like small tools on my desk, and a Lazy Susan is a great option. Maybe you only need a few of each color on hand at all times.
This is an easy way to keep those easily on hand without having to get up and grab what you need. With ADHD, sometimes we break our concentration by getting up; so having what we need in front of us already is a huge time-saver.
This isn’t just a colored pencil organizer, either. You can use it for other often-used tools:
- Glue sticks
- Crayons
- Gel pens
- Scissors

Zipper bag
Are you an on-the-go artist? Maybe you have a good supply of colored pencils to take with you wherever you go!
Simple pencil cases could do the trick too. I find that zipper bags are smaller and a bit more portable. It’ll fit easily in a small space like a backpack or tote.
I bought this Animal Crossing one for Allison on Etsy, and she uses it constantly! Seriously, check small businesses on Etsy for cute ideas. A zipper bag with a favorite character would be a great gift for anyone- even adult nerds like me.

Drawer divider
I only need the basic colors for my planner, so I don’t need a complicated storage system.
Dollar Tree has really good drawer dividers like this, which you can use for other art and craft supplies too. Honestly- Dollar Tree has a LOT of cool things and it’s so easy to spend a ton of money there.
I have a few of these for office supplies and they help me stay organized, too! Honestly, these are great for any office or art and craft room.
You can also find large ones that have removable dividers. That would be great for random supplies that are awkwardly shaped.
Other creative ideas
The above 4 are ones that we use in our house. But there are SO many other colored pencil storage ideas. Here are a few different options:
- Mason jars
- Tin cans
- Plastic cups
- Empty toilet paper rolls– You can cover them with construction paper to add a colorful pop to your creative space. What a great idea!
- Pencil roll– These are also very portable and good if you just want to take a few with you!
What about you? What’s your ultimate storage solution when it comes to colored pencils? Leave a comment and give us more ideas!
